Grounding
Helps: when options are already on the table and a gut feel may be steering; mechanical totals beat unaided judgement in prediction studies by a small margin, and writing the gut score first keeps the total from pulling it, but on a personal decision the value is the gap between the two, which has not been tested
Backfires: when the criteria are chosen or reweighted after a favourite has formed, so the total is built to agree with the gut, when analysing reasons pushes the choice towards whatever is easy to put into words, or when the gut score written first pulls the criteria scores towards it
